questions?Will Senior Privileges be impacted?
Seniors will actually have a bit more freedom than in the past. While lunches are shorter, off campus privileges will be extended to include any period that a senior has free (i.e. lunch, study hall, athletic study hall). As always, off-campus privileges require parent permission.
How will Study Hall work? Junior Study hall and Athletic Study hall?
The details are still being worked out but students (Freshmen, Sophomores and Juniors) should still expect to check in during study halls times.
How does the “Embedded Lunch” work?
It creates an extra period in your day. All students will have lunch scheduled daily during a time when no other classes will be scheduled. This gives you the possibility to use 8 periods in your day. “Embedded” simply means that every student has a lunch and lunch no longer uses/take-up a period of the day.
How lunch works- A, B, C lunch?
On Blue and Gold days, lunch A and C work as normal, but B is called a “Split Lunch.” Once you request your classes in the spring we will work with the departments to see which classes best fit the “split lunch” set up. It can provide a great break for your Blue/Gold period classes.
Do Early Bird Classes change?
No
How will AP Science work?
We will have an early bird option where students will meet EB and during 1st period on the "Scout Days" (which are the 8 period days). Then, on the "Blue Day" (which is when the odd periods meet), the AP science students would meet 1st hour, and on the "Gold Day" (which is when the even periods meet) the students would meet during the PLT (Personal Learning Time) for class.
What about Early Bird AP Science?
As for a non-early bird AP Science, it no longer has to be offered in conjunction with a lunch hour because lunch is now embedded. Therefore, if there was an AP science course offered 2-3, then on the "Scout Days" students would meet 2nd and 3rd, on the "Blue Day" they would meet 3rd, and on the "Gold Day" they would meet 2nd.
When will we start and end school with this new schedule?
This is still tentative, but on Scout Days (M,T,F) we’ll go from 8:15 a.m. - 3:20 p.m. and then on Blue/Gold Days (W,Th) we’ll go from 8:50 a.m. - 3:20 p.m. Late starts will now be consistent, two days each week, which is nice. Since we’ll have two “late starts” each week, you can come in early for extra help or gain extra sleep.
How will the longer classes work? What will/can we do?
You will have time to complete more work during class, finish labs, participate in rich discussions, create, engage in projects, essays, portfolios, etc. You’ll have short breaks throughout the longer period. You’ll do variety of different things during the block.
Bus arrival
We are still in process, but the busses will not be picking you up at 6:30am anymore! The time will be adjusted to accommodate our new schedule. More information will be shared as it becomes available.
If one chooses not to take an extra class, is a study hall guaranteed?
We are continuing the process of re-imagining how study hall can best meet the needs of our students. You would be able to sign up for a study hall and use that time as needed.
How does the schedule give me an extra period as a sophomore?
This new schedule provides the possibility for students to choose another class through the embedded lunch. Instead of taking up a full class period for your lunch, you have freedom to choose another class.
If I take band, orchestra or choir can I take another elective?
You possibly could with this new schedule, but it will depend on quite a few factors like graduation requirements and when specific classes meet during the day.
For music classes, how will the Wednesday's and Thursday's work? Will students play their instruments for over an hour straight?
The longer periods will still be rehearsal days for music ensemble classes (both instrumental and vocal), but these rehearsals will likely include breaks—especially for younger students. The longer periods will be very helpful for performance preparation as they will allow for full run-throughs and more time to work out logistics in a relaxed manner. They will also be useful for breaking out into sectionals and for collaborating both with other music classes and with our musicians in residence.
Why do you need to do the new schedule thing for next school year?
Thank you for your question and thoughts. You’re right, we do integrate personal responsibility throughout your student experience at the High School. We studied and discussed the research around adolescent sleep patterns, neuroscience and brain development and the most effective time of the day for students at this age. This also closely aligns with the research and movement towards a flexible work schedule in the corporate world.
Why does this always pop up when I restart my computer?
Thank you for taking the time to pass along your thoughts. This new schedule provides another opportunity for every student to choose another class through the embedded lunch. Instead of taking up a full class period for your lunch, you have freedom to choose another class. We wanted to engage the students in a two way conversation about these changes for next year. This is not intended to be an inconvenience.
